OPPO R17 experience: beyond fashion, R series also wants to play “black technology”?

The OPPO of the first half of the year is still the most familiar OPPO, R series (R15 and R15 Dreamland Edition) featuring trendy fashion products. Star spokesmen need two hands to count them. The A series continues to harvest users in the mid-to-low end market of $1,000 to $2,000 with products with less high configuration but the same stylish appearance.
However, in the second half of the year, with the release of Find X, the OPPO style suddenly changed. On the product OPPO defines as the “flagship of the future,” OPPO has come up with the most breakthrough design in smartphones today, the first 3D structured light module in the Android camp to be mass-produced, and the SuperVOOC super-flash that can fill a phone in 35 minutes. Perhaps more specifically, OPPO has not asked any domestic celebrity endorsers for Find X, but has focused its marketing efforts entirely on the product.
OPPO’s idea of “returning to the product” also continued in the R-series. At the just-concluded launch of the new R 17 product, there was no obvious one, and the product became the absolute protagonist.

Since OPPO chose to release almost all of R17’s product information early before the launch, there’s no secret to the R17 product itself, but there’s still a lot to talk about on R17.
The screen may be the most intuitive change in the appearance of R17.
The previous generation of R15 used a “full screen beyond the field of vision”. In fact, it is the most common “small bang” heterosexual full screen in this year’s domestic machine. The R17 screen still has a special cut, but the cut screen area is significantly smaller, from “small bang” to a similar droplet shape of the continuous arc, OPPO. The screen of R17 is called “water droplet screen” (the top curve is similar to the instant that water drops will fall).
As for the design of “water droplet screen”, it is a subjective aesthetic problem. From the feedback of Internet users after the announcement of R17 by OPPO, at least more Internet users tend to prefer smaller, more coherent “droplets” than regular “bangs”.

Compared to the R15, the lower border of the R17 screen (commonly known as the “jaw”) has been significantly narrowed, and is already very close to the COP-encapsulated Find X (roughly 1 mm wide), which should be the narrowest of all COF-encapsulated phones currently available.

After half a year of development, screen fingerprints are becoming the standard of more and more high-end mobile phones. The speed and success of screen fingerprints identification have also made significant progress. However, compared with the traditional capacitive fingerprint that can be unlocked at a touch, the screen fingerprint still has a certain gap in experience.
When does screen fingerprint experience compare favorably with traditional capacitive fingerprints? OPPO R17 is the nearest answer.
When the screen is lit up, the screen fingerprint of OPPO R17 is so close to the capacitive fingerprint in recognition speed that it can almost be “unlocked at a touch,” the first fingerprint phone I’ve ever used on any screen to do this steadily.
However, the screen fingerprint is located in the screen. Unlike capacitive fingerprints, screen fingerprints do not have a distinct identification area to locate, so it is unavoidable to use fingerprints because of finger pressure position deviation resulting in unlocking failure. The solution is to make the finger face and fingerprint identification area contact as fully as possible when the fingerprint is input, and then make the whole finger face contact the fingerprint identification position as much as possible when unlocking, which can effectively improve the success rate of fingerprint identification including R17.
With the screen completely extinguished or with the Always On Display interface, R17’s screen fingerprint recognition speed drops somewhat (though still generally faster than other screen fingerprint handsets), requiring a finger pause on the screen. I do not know that the late OPPO can further improve the screen speed of R17 by software optimization.
Apart from the algorithmic polishing, the core reason OPPO can make the R17 screen fingerprint experience so fast should be the adoption of a new generation of hardware. According to OPPO officials, the R17’s photosensitive screen fingerprint uses an off-screen lens scheme, with CMOS sensors at the bottom of the screen up to 4 square millimetres in size and a lot of customization on the lens and other hardware.
In terms of functional adaptation, there is no problem with R17’s screen fingerprints. WeChat and Alipay’s two major app payments have all been adapted.

The R17 design extends the metal frame + front and rear double-sided glass design used on the R15, with the middle frame being brightened and the rear cover still being 2.5D (R17 Pro is 3D hot-bending glass).

Previous generations of OPPO products, including R15, had been designed with a “floating screen” with a plastic rim around the screen. The entire screen module was slightly higher than the middle frame to achieve a “floating” visual effect. This treatment helps to visually thinner, but has some side effects on the handle.
On the R17, the OPPO removes the plastic wrap around the screen, and the glass cover is pasted directly onto the metal frame that has been chamfered twice. This treatment can narrow the black side of the screen on the one hand, but also effectively improve the grip feel.
By the way, if you feel bad after buying R17, you can consider pulling out the film posted at the factory. The R17 film is customized for screen fingerprints, and it feels good, but it’s a plastic film, after all, which has a slight effect on the grip.
In the back cover, R17 still uses the first streamer tinting process on R15, and all versions are gradients.
But in gradient processing, R17 changed from two simple colors on R15 up and down to a mixed gradient of many colors, and added vertical textures, you can see different effects in different light, the visual effect is more rich.
In addition to the gradients of streamer blue and neon violet, R17 provides a very special fog gradient. On the basis of streamer dotting technology, this edition has been etched on the surface to produce a visual effect of grinding texture.
Xiaolong 670, 8GB + 128GB
On SoC, R17 eventually replaced the three generations of Myron 660 on R11, R11s, and R15 with a brand new Myron 670 (R17 Pro is Myron 710).

There’s not much to say about system fluency, app startup, multi-tasking switching, sliding frame rate and hand-tracking are no problem, compared with the Mirage 845 Find X is not much inferior.
In terms of game optimization, R17 also specializes in more than 10 popular games, including the familiar “King Glory”, “Stimulate the Battlefield”, “All Army Out”, “Wild Action”, “QQ Flying Car”, in which “Stimulate the Battlefield” can run in full frame in super-high frame mode, and “King Glory”. Although the hardware is not much different from the R15, the R17 algorithm should have made a lot of improvements, especially at night.
Sony’s IMX519, which has high pixels and small pixels, isn’t very good for night shots that require high light intake, but OPPO uses a more aggressive composition algorithm on the R17 (which in low light suggests keeping the phone stable for better night shots), allowing the R17 to still be able to take fairly good night shots with IMX519. Quality.

ColorOS 5.2 and AR real scene navigation
In terms of system, OPPO R17 is equipped with ColorOS 5.2 operating system based on Android 8.1.
The new version of ColorOS has made minor adjustments to the UI, adding new features such as smart sidebar, free collection, game space and so on. What’s interesting is the real-time navigation based on OPPO and ARUnit.
After turning on this feature, users can see not only the real environment around them, but also the intelligent assistant of OPPO, Xiao Euro, guiding the road intelligently. It is worth mentioning that this function is not simply based on GPS, but the use of SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) technology, at intersections and other complex scenes combined with geographical coordinates, more accurate judgment.

A brand new R series
In the product sequence of OPPO, the positioning of R series is “fashion tide product”. The R series has maintained excellent market performance over the past few years thanks to stylish designs, excellent marketing, powerful channels, and super-explosives such as the R9.
But with the launch of Find X, OPPO’s R-Series product ideas have also been tweaked: in addition to maintaining traditional fashion, OPPO has added more technical elements to the R-Series.
From the two releases, R17 can be seen as a continuation of the traditional R series, while R17 Pro takes on more “exploration” missions. Unfortunately, R17 Pro was launched much later than R17, and we need to wait until mid-October to see it.
We also asked OPPO’s product managers about this question during the post-conference interview, and got two main reasons: first, for the rhythm of the product, like the previous version of Plus before the R-series, R17 Pro was originally launched at a staggered time with R17; second, R17 Pro took the lead in introducing a post-TOF Module calibration is very difficult, and it is difficult to produce.
